Weekly forecast

The weather forecast this week promises the beginning of a summer spell for us. Monday shows light rain with gentle breeze but after that the remainder of the week shows sunny intervals with gentle breeze, temperatures quickly rising to 23 to 26 with night-time temps of 14 to 16 degrees.

Race results

Yesterday (Sat 10th) saw 2 club members challenge themselves by standing at 7:00 am with Approx. 1500 other runners on the start line of the Race to the Stones 100k race. This is an off-road race that can be completed over 2 days or in one go as both Chris Loach and Luke Fielder did. Chris finished in a brilliant position of 87th overall in 11 hours 44 mins, Luke finished at about 2:00 am on Sunday in a time of 19 hours 18 mins.

Saturday also saw Harry Eades take part in the Brean beach race 10K finishing in 49:38 giving him over a 1-minute pb. As this race was entirely on the sand a great time.

Today saw 5 club members take the short trip across the bridge to Chepstow to take part in the re-arranged Chepstow racecourse 10K. Kev Bale was 5th overall and 1st WAC man in a time of 37:38, followed by Rob Robertson in 40:37, Steve Lovell in 42:16 and Dave Gilhooley in 62:13. Katie Gormley was the sole female WAC competitor finishing a fine 3rd place overall in a time of 44:19 a great effort after last week’s pb and hill reps on KDH Saturday morning.

On the Tri front congratulations to Sarah Wheatley who travelled to the Cotswolds to take part in the Classic 113 – half ironman. After several delays, the swim element was eventually cancelled, notwithstanding the disappointment of not being able to put the many hours of swim training to the test Sarah competed the 56-mile bike element in 3.31 and the 13.1 mile run in 2:29 for an overall time of 6:06.

Not a race but what looked like a great time was had by 12 members who travelled to Crickhowell to help celebrate Kat Louise’s birthday with her this weekend.

Information and help needed:

The weekly update will shortly be posted under the Club News section of the new website. With the information now being posted on fb on the Weston Athletic Club page and on the website, we will no longer send the update as an email on Sunday evening. If there are members who do not access fb or utilise the web and would still like it sent as a mail, please let us know by mailing jimwotton@sky.com A new mailing list will be produced to accommodate this request.

Wondering what sessions and activities are taking place this week/month? If you have not already looked, please take a bit of time to look the new website. You will see that we now have a monthly calendar which is shown via the coaching, training and trail pages as well as the calendar tab. The combined calendar will have all the activities shown on it or you can limit the calendar to show just the training, trail or races detail as you choose.

Tuesday sessions will still be run under Covid regulations until 20/7 at the earliest. Please do not come along to the session if you have Covid or have any of the 4 main Covid symptoms.

The August championship races will be the Haselbury MT 10k on the 4/8, the Standish Woodland chase on the 8/8 and the Bath 2 tunnels half on the 15/8.

The Thursday meeting at Hutton Moor will again be at 6:15. Anybody who wishes to run with others can meet in Hutton Moor car park at 6:05 for 6:15 and split into groups if necessary. – This is not a club session just an opportunity to meet with other people for a Socially Distanced run. You will run at your own risk, and you will be responsible for making sure that you maintain the 2m gap from other runners both to the side, front and behind. Runners who on Thursdays have run with John Grimsey, Colin Lintern/Jim Wotton and Debbie Vowles should look at the WAC Group 6 Elites fb for details of this Thursdays (15/7) run. Anybody running with John and co will meet as arranged and not at HM.

The Saturday session this week (17/7) will be advised shortly. Meet at 8:00am for the session led by Jason.

We should get confirmation about Covid restriction easing from 19/7 tomorrow. Hopefully, rules can be relaxed to allow more races to take place in the format that we have previously been used to. Please remember that social distancing is still in force and should be observed in any club or group activities that you attend.

We have the July code for a 10% discount and free postage on orders from Sportsshoes (min order value £30). This code is now shown on the WAC members social fb page for WAC member use only. Please ask me or Julia if you do not access fb and wish to put in an order with them.
