Weather Forecast for Week Ahead
The weather forecast is again mixed but at present looks to be getting better later in the week. Monday to Thursday looks to be wet quite a lot of the time then sunny intervals and rising temperatures with daily high temps of between 17 to 21 and gentle to moderate winds and night temps of 13 to 14.
Today saw the first club championship race for 16 months with 18 club members travelling to Martock to take on the 10k road race. The race is held on quiet country lanes with a 9:00 am start to try to avoid the traffic as much as possible. Even at 9 the weather was a warm 18 degrees making the slightly undulating course a tougher challenge esp. with a ‘bring your own cup’ water station policy.
Chris McMillan continued his excellent form from before the pandemic winning the race in a new PB of 32:19. Chris was followed by Kieron Summers in 3rd place and 1st in age cat with a time of 34:26, Chris Selman was 3rd WAC man home in 5thoverall in a new pb of 35:26, followed in 6th overall by Kev Bale in 35:40. Stephen Powell finished 3rd V40 in 39:31. If there had been a team prize we would have definitely won it with 4 in the first 6.
Katie Gormley was 1st WAC lady in 3rd overall lowering the current pb that she set only a few weeks ago to 42:21. Hannah Keating was another member taking a big chunk off her pb finishing second WAC lady in 48:30, Hannah was followed by Sheryl Selway who was 2nd in her age category in 49:20.
Yesterday saw more runners taking part in the off-road ultra – Ham/Lyme races. Dan Speakman completed the 100k event finishing 12th overall in 12 hours 26. Clare Harvey, Georgie Ford, Laura Fricker, Sam Walkley and Toby Norman completed the 50k event in times between 5:17 and 6:56 but full results are not yet available.
Cam Slater has not been getting much sleep or training lately after recently becoming a father. However, it does not seem to have done him too much harm when he finished 3rd today in the Bath 2 Tunnels 10k race in 36:18.
Not a race but well worthy of a mention was the run by 6 club members of the Gordano Round (27.6 miles) on Saturday. Sue Dyer, Tracey Dyer, Ann Clutterbuck, Tarisa Barker, Sarah White and Kate Wilson completed the distance in just under 8 hours.
On the Tri front, Pete and Rachel Stacey together with Andy Hayes completed the Holkham half distance Ironman today. Andy did 5:50:40 and came first in his age cat. Pete was 6:32:34 and was 4th in his age cat (PB) & Rachel was 7:25:14 (PB) this also included the time giving first aid to a man who went over his handlebars in front of her until help arrived.
Information and Help Needed:
Tuesday sessions will still be run under Covid regulations until 20/7 at the earliest. Please do not come along to the session if you have Covid or have any of the 4 main Covid symptoms. Park in the car park at HM leaving at least 1 parking space gap between vehicles. Please do not congregate in groups for a chat but come straight across to the field at the back of HM by 7:00 where you will be directed to join one of the groups. Each of the coaches will be using a different section of the field to keep the groups well separated. You will not be able to use the HM premises so please come run ready and we suggest that you bring hand gel to use afterwards and a drink if you think you will want one.
Following today’s championship race at Martock results can be found on split second timing. We will produce a championship result sheet which will be on the website asap. There will be a separate road and off-road championship plus a combined overall. The age categories and age cat allowances will be as previous years and will be based on your best 4 road and best 4 off-road results from the races held between today and 31/12/21. We are hoping to have between 8 and 10 local races in both road and off-road sections, in view of the reduced time and number of races there will not be a further requirement for a specific number of 5k, 5-mile, 10k etc. Details of further races will follow shortly and scoring detail added to the championship page that can be found under the races section of the new website.

The Thursday meeting at Hutton Moor had more runners turn up this week. This week the meet will again be at 6:15 so that the run can be completed in the light. Anybody who wishes to run with others can meet in Hutton Moor car park at 6:05 for 6:15 and split into groups if necessary. – This is not a club session just an opportunity to meet with other people for a Socially Distanced run. You will run at your own risk, and you will be responsible for making sure that you maintain the 2m gap from other runners both to the side, front and behind. Runners who on Thursdays have run with John Grimsey, Colin Lintern/Jim Wotton and Debbie Vowles should look at the WAC Group 6 Elites fb for details of this Thursdays (8/7) run. Anybody running with John and co will meet as arranged and not at HM.
The Saturday session this week (10/7) will be held in Weston Woods. Meet at 8:00am in the car park for the session led by Jason.
We should get more information about Covid restriction easing from 19/7 this week. Hopefully, rules can be relaxed to allow more races to take place in the format that we have previously been used to.
