Read All About It – Weekly Update 7/4/24. 

 

Weekly forecast 

This week is forecast to be windy and wet again with a promise of something drier with sunny spells for next Friday and Saturday. A moderate to fresh south westerly wind will bring showers or longer periods of rain throughout the week with v strong winds on Tuesday. The forecast shows max 11 to 16 and minimum 6 to 12.

 

Road race results

Thursday the 4th saw the 7th Prom run of the series with a bumper crop of 49 entries from Chepstow swelling the number of finishers to 234. Ben Haines was 1st WAC runner and 1st V40 in 27.57 followed by Kieron Summers who was 2nd V40 in 28.28 and Ian Connock in 29.07. Richard Goddard was 3rd V60 in 33.44.

Alice Smith was 1st WAC runner and 3rd V40 in 32.21, followed by Hannah Keating in 34.08 and Pip Stephens who was 3rd V50 in 35.10. Rachael Vincent was 3rd V60 in 42.46.

 

Sunday saw James Pink and Sarah Harris complete the Brighton Marathon. James finished in 4.04.21 and Sarah finished in a time of 4.45.31.

 

Sunday saw Lindsey Clifford continue her London training by getting to know part of the city by taking part in the London Landmarks half marathon finishing in 3.15.46.

 

Sunday also saw the running of the Brabazon 10k around Bradley Stoke and Patchway. Niki Fulstow was the sole WAC entry finishing 6th lady overall and 1st V40 in 52.38

  

Off-Road race results 

Bank Holiday Monday saw 24 Weston members take part in the Shapwick Bunny Hop. This is a 7.5-mile race with 4 miles of very muddy off road, approx. 1 mile of road and 2 miles of path along the side of a canal in the middle.

The ladies just took the honours on the day securing first, third and fourth overall with the men securing third, fourth and thirteenth. Susan Duncan was 1st lady in 56.33 followed by Hannah Keating 2nd SF in 59.21 and Kattie Gormley 3rd SF in 59.52.

Darren Stacey was 3rd overall and 1st V40 in 49.09, followed by Chris Selman 4th overall and 2nd V40 and Stuart Diamond 1st V50 in 57.34.

 

Sunday saw 2 club members take part in the Minster Milers Mash 10k Multi terrain run which includes 630ft of climb. Toby Norman finished 2nd overall in 39.58 with Rachael Vincent  finishing 1st V60 in 54.08.

Membership Renewal 1/4/24 

Thank you to the 90 plus members who have already taken the time to renew their 24/25 membership. Please try to find time to do this when you can, it takes much less admin time for our membership secretary when the process is all completed as quickly as possible.

 

2024 AGM   

The club AGM will take place on the 11/4/24 at Priory school at 7.00pm. Check in your spam folder if you have not seen the mail yet.

April Marathon Races

Sunday 7th of April saw the first of 4 weekends where club members put months of training to use by taking part in the Brighton, Manchester, London, and Newport marathons. Good luck to everybody taking part and supporting the runners taking part.

 

Junior Athletics interest 

If you have any family or friends who may enquire about athletic opportunities in Weston for youngsters in the first instance we would suggest they look at North Somerset AC. NSAC meet at Priory school on Wednesday evenings, the sessions are from 6.30 to 7.30 for ages 8 to 11 and 7.30 to 8.30 for ages 11+. More detail can be found on the NSAC website which has recently been updated and re-launched and can be found at https://www.facebook.com/NorthSomersetAC      

 

2024 Championship

Details of the 2024 championship structure and races have previously been announced and are shown on the website under members/2024 Championship.

The races for May and June are:

TWAC 

The TWAC session on Monday 8th April is named ‘Around the Point’ will be group runs meeting at the Woodspring Priory NT car park at Sand Point at 6.50 for 7.00.

Group lead runs around the perimeter of Sand Point.
Suitable for anyone at any pace
Walkers can join the Twalking group as well.

Tuesday Reps/Intervals   

There will be two organised reps/interval sessions this Tuesday 9/4/24 taken by Carol, Nick, or Jim. The forecast is bad with strong westerly winds and extremely high tide at 8.00pm so sessions may be subject change, but plans are:

Session one:

Warm up – 5 min progressive

Main set – 10 x 3 min hard with 90 secs rolling recovery.

Cool down – 5 min easy

 

Second session

South Road reps

Warm up – 1 mile

Main set – 30 mins continuous

Cool down – 1 mile

Both sessions for all abilities

All meet at the shelter between the Trop and Revo at 6.50 for 7.00pm start.

 

The Wednesday swim sessions 20.20 to 21.30 at Burnham-on-Sea pool

Over winter is the ideal time to brush up and develop your swimming technique, ideal prep for next season. Suitable for beginners to seasoned triathletes, injured runners – develop your aerobic capacity and muscles you didn’t know existed

Sessions can be booked in blocks of five (£32.50) or ten (£55.00) ad hoc PAY as you GO (£6.50) sessions occasionally available, for PAYG – please ask if there’s space prior to session
