Weekly Update 3/4/22 

Weekly forecast

The forecast for this week is quite unsettled but will be slightly warmer than the last few days. Temperatures will be 10 to 13 max and min 3 to 9. Winds will be mainly westerly moderate to fresh but with a period of strong wind on Wednesday. Mainly cloudy with periods of showers and light rain but also a chance of sunny intervals at times.

The weekend has seen the busiest racing weekend of the year so far.

Road race results 

Sunday the 3rd of April was the day that months of running was put to the test in the Manchester and Taunton marathons.

11 WAC members took part in the Manchester race which was also the qualifying race for the Commonwealth and European championships so it had a tremendously high standard of runners amongst the 000’s taking part. Susan Duncan who had been recovering from injury that impacted on her sub three attempt finished 1st WAC lady in 3.05.06, Katie Gormley finished 2nd WAC lady in a brilliant new pb of 3.15.14 followed by Hannah Keating in a similar excellent new pb taking over 10 minutes off her previous time in 3.24.19. Sarah Ridout broke the 4-hour mark for the first time in a new pb of 3.59.02 with Stefania Garau also breaking her pb in 4.18.14

Chris Selman produced an excellent run for his first marathon finishing in 2.44.07, Kevin Bale also smashed his pb in a time of 2.53.42. Cameron Slater was 3rd WAC finisher in 3.00.56 followed by Marc Whiting in 3.16.56, Stephen Powell in 3.20.20

And Andrew Pitts in 4.11.06

Taking place closer to home was the Taunton Marathon. Alice Smith was the only WAC entry this year, but she ran an amazing race on the 2-lap course to finish first lady overall in 3.14.55

Also taking place at the same time was the Taunton half on one lap of the same course. It was again one of our lady runners Nia Davies who ran a magnificent race to set yet another pb and finish in second place overall and first LV50 in 1.27.45. Julie Bailiss recently recovered from covid was 2nd WAC lady in 1.49.46, followed by Rob Osment in 1.52.58, Sam Buzza in 1.56.03, Debbie Brooks 2.18.57 and Adrian Marshall completing his 35th Taunton now as an MV75 in 2.28.43.

Also taking place on Sunday were the following.

Salisbury 10- mile which Vicki Wilkins ran in 1.26

Reading half marathon which Kirsty Dearing ran in 2.21.03

London Landmarks half marathon which Lindsey Clifford ran in 3.30.31 This was Lindsey’s third half marathon in 3 weeks raising money for the Harvey Hext Trust and we are sure that she would be pleased to receive any further donations.

Off-Road race results 

Taking place on Saturday was the Powderham Castle 10-mile MT race. Martin Hurcombe finished in 1.19.54 and 2nd MV50.

Sunday 3rd April saw one of the Somerset Series races a 10k MT at Butleigh. 5 WAC runners took part and while there are not yet any full results available the WAC positions were as follows: 1st WAC Adrian Noble, Stuart Diamond 48.03, Pam Withers, Helen Diamond 1.02, and Paul Snelling our V75.

Also taking place today was the Exe to Axe race which includes much of the Grizzly terrain on 22 miles and 4000ft climb of the South Coast path. Guy Bradford looks to have been the only WAC finisher in 4.03.34.     

Multi Event results

No multi events to report on this week of which we are aware.

Membership Renewal 1/4/22 

Club and EA memberships are due 1/4/22. The club membership fees will be £20 (or £10 social) as before but the EA fee is increasing to £16 this year. Thank you to the ninety members who have renewed since Friday, please keep the steady flow of renewals coming this week to make Rachel Andrews our membership secretary happy.

The 2022 championship races for May and June have now been added to the table attached to the Handicap result page of the website, they are as follow.

May – 5th Prom run, 15th Beer Blazer

June – 9/6 Rowberrow Romp, 14/6 Clevedon 10k and 26/6 Torbay half

Monday night TWAC session (4/4) this week is the Dolebury fell race. The session starts with a warm-up from the Crown Inn at Churchill to the top of Dolebury and then for those who wish to join in do as many circuits of the top from 0 to 10k distance.

This week’s Rep/interval session on Tuesday the 5th meet 6.50 for 7:00 on the field at the rear of Hutton Moor. Nick and Jim will take the sessions. Session suitable for all abilities.

The Wednesday swim sessions at Burnham-on-Sea pool. These sessions need to be booked and paid for – please email Margaret and Charlotte at westonacmultisports@gmail.com

We now have the April code for the 10% discount and free postage on orders from Sportsshoes (min order value £30). This code is on the WAC members social fb page for WAC member use only. Please ask Jim or Julia if you do not access fb and wish to put in an order with them.

New members can pick up their kit after training on Tuesday night on the seafront, come along at about 7.45 and find Jim Wotton. If you cannot get to the seafront let Chris Loach or Jim Wotton know and we will see what we can do. Ladies kit comes in sizes 8, 10, 12 etc.

There will be no group led runs from HM on Prom Run nights.
