Read All About It – Weekly Update 22/9/24 

 

Weekly forecast 

The forecast this week is for the weather to become unsettled and colder towards next weekend. A gentle to moderate Westerly wind flow will bring rain showers and longer periods of rain but a few sunny intervals as well. Max temperatures 12 to 17 and min 5 to 12.

 

Road race results

Sunday the 22nd saw 10 WAC members take part in the Oldbury 10-mile race. This race is on a fast flat route and serves as the Avon area 10-mile championships.

Ben Haines was 5th overall and 2nd V40 in a time of 56.22 followed by Kieron Summers 6th overall and 1st V50 in 56.28, Chris Selman in 58.26, Matt Wheeler 2nd V50 in 1.02.55, Stuart Diamond in 1.09.13 and Marc Robinson in 1.18.06.

Laura Fricker was 3rd lady and 2nd SF overall in 1.06. 25, Hannah Keating 5th lady overall and 3rd SF in a new pb of 1.10.32. Julie Bailiss in 1.22.39 and Helen Diamond in 1.24.53.

Kieron, Chris, Matt, Laura and Julie came away with the Avon medal for their category.

 

The weekend saw Susan Duncan travel a long way North to Redcar to take part in the half marathon on Sunday. Susan finished a very competitive race in 1.27.36.

 

Off-Road race results

Saturday saw 4 teams of WAC runners take part in the Mendip Way relay which is organised by the Mendip Hills hash. Teams of 5 run the 30 miles in legs of between 5 and 7 miles. Our Ladies and men’s teams both finished first out of a field with 38 teams. The men finished in 3 hrs 53 and the ladies in 4.45, our mixed team in finished in 4.24 and the 2nd men’s team in 4.53.

 

On Sunday Barry Hall completed his 60th marathon distance event this time it was on a looped course of 5.5k.

 

Multi Event Results

Sunday saw Sarah Weare take part in the Tenby Ironman the 12 full Tri of her career. The course is tough with both a V Hilly cycle and run and for the second time running Sarah took on the race in awful weather for the hilly cycle part at least. Sarah completed the sea swim in 1.33.18 and the bike ride in 7.48.09. Sarah started her run at just after 5pm and at 8.24 is just over halfway on the run and predicted to finish at about 11.15pm.

Self-Navigation run Sunday 29th September

Ian Purnell is organising the latest edition of the excellent self-navigation run for club members next week and entries are still open if you wish to take part. Please contact Ian as soon as possible and see the detail on the TWAC fb page.

Entries close on Wednesday evening 25/9, get your e-mails to Ian, the sooner the better, to enter at ianpurnell2@yahoo.co.uk he needs to know numbers so that he can get maps printed.

If anyone is unsure if they have enough map skills to take part, then Ian will be doing a short run/map session on Thursday 18:30 from Uphill boat yard. This should cover what you would need to know to complete the event.

 

Xmas Cracker and Muddle are open for entries 

The Xmas Cracker and the Mendip Muddle are open for entry on the Race Nation website or via the WestonAC website.

 

Cracker beginners/improvers/returners  group

We will be running our Xmas Cracker couch to 10k beginners’ group for the 11th year running starting in October. Paul Baker will be organising the program, so if you or any friends or family want to start running, return to running after a break or injury, or want help to motivate you then this is the group you/they need. Meetings on Monday nights and Saturday mornings are supported by our Leaders and club members who will be there to help you. Monday 23rd September is ‘Up Hill Down Hill’ meet at 6.50 Meet Uphill Boat Yard BS23 4XR

You will have the choice of two loops, a hilly loop, and an easier loop. Whatever you are training for, this will be the perfect session, if you are on recovery, this is the perfect session, your first time, this will be the perfect session.
Whether you work hard ok or take it gently, it is up to you.

Kit Clothes suitable for weather, trail shoes, water, and head torch plus spare batteries.

Tuesday Reps/Intervals   

This week 24/9 we will be back on the seafront for intervals/reps. There will be 2 effort sessions taken by Nick and Jim. Meet on the seafront at 6.50 between the Trop and Revo. Parking on the front is free after 6.00pm.

First session: Focus on stride length

Main set

10 x 2mins (as 1min 30secs moderate pace followed by 30 secs fast) with 1 min RR

Second session

Sessions suitable for all abilities

 

Wednesday Swimming

The Wednesday swim sessions at Burnham-on-Sea pool have now re-started.

The Wednesday night swims are currently full, so a waiting list is in operation. Please message Margaret before transferring any £££. There are limited spaces left for the last 5 sessions. Priority will be given to those who have booked for the first 5 and wish to extend for the full 10. The next payment block of 10 starts on Wed 13 November 2024

The sessions are suitable for beginners to seasoned triathletes, injured runners – develop your aerobic capacity and muscles you didn’t know existed

Sessions starting from 4/9 can be booked now in blocks of five (£32.50) or ten (£55.00) ad hoc PAY as you GO (£6.50) sessions occasionally available, for PAYG – please ask if there’s space prior to session
