Read All About It – Weekly Update 21/7/24.
Weekly forecast
Last Sunday there was no mention of the 2 hot days we were to have. This week the forecast is for the wind direction to remain westerly initially moderate but falling to gentle with sun or sunny intervals. The wind will strengthen to moderate again on Thursday to accompany a belt of rain before becoming sunny again. Max 20 to 22 with min 11 to 14. There is the promise of a possible more general warming and longer period of settled warm weather from the end of this week.
Road race results
There are no road results that we are aware of this week, but 8 Weston members turned the clock back quite a number of years to fly the flag for Weston at a track event again. Report below from correspondent Lou Davison.
A great day was had by 8 WAC members at the Masters track meeting at Yate on Sunday 21st.
In the 5000m Nia Davies bravely led the mixed heat from the halfway point only to be outkicked at the death but finishing 1st female overall in 20.05.10.
Sheryl Selway and Katie Gormley were next up in the 1500m. Katie set out to beat her longstanding schooldays PB, after a great battle with the pack she finished strongly for a PB of 5.48.98 for 4th place. Sheryl Selway raced well in a big field for 12th place in 6.48.18. Sheryl then doubled up by taking on the 800m, a well-judged race gave her 4th in her heat and just fractionally outside her PB with 3.21.82.
Lou Davison made her track debut taking on three events. The highlight was her victory in her 100m heat recording a speedy 15.32. The sprinting continued with 4th place in her 200m heat in 32.78. Lou then finished the day with a great 800m debut, 6th place, just missing the 3-minute barrier in 3.03.81.
Darren Stacey competed well in a high quality 1500m, recording 4.40.83 for 7th place. He then went on to race a great tactical 5000m event finishing second overall in 17.30.14, he was followed in 8th place by Matt Wheeler who battled hard in the wind for his 18.23.56.
Ian Connock set his sights on breaking the 10 min barrier for 3000m. A superbly paced race, holding on to the leading pack for as long as he could rewarded him with 9.54.78 and 4th place.
The race of the day for the Weston AC fans on the side-lines was David Hall in his 800m heat. Using his tactical experience, he tucked in behind the leader and then unleashed a devastating sprint to take the victory in 2.36.54.
Off-Road race results
Wednesday saw the Championship race the Pawlett Plod 10k organised by Burnham Harriers.
This is on off-road race but this year the grass was so long many runners were heard to mention never again but that did not stop the 6 Weston runners coming back with some excellent results. Julian Forbes was 3rd overall and 1st V40 in 38.42, followed by Susan Duncan who was 2nd lady and 1st V35 in 42.57, Stuart Diamond 3rd V50 in 46.16, Rob Osment in 52.57, Niki Fulstow in 53.11 and Rachael Vincent 1st V55 in 54.12.
Thursday night saw Marc Bostock take part in the TACH organised Purdown Pursuit finishing the 10k off-road race in 55.44.
Saturday saw 2 WAC members take part in the International Snowdon Mountain race. This race is 15.35k with 994m of climb with 7.16k up, 7.16k down and 1k flat. Emma Barker finished in 2.32.01 and Alex Barker in 2.27.55.
Many of you will have seen that White Star Running/Keep Running Rural have ceased organising races with their last event the Cider Frolic and Piggy Plod taking place this past weekend. No results are available, but Ian Regan and Mel Trego took part in the 12hr Frolic on Saturday. Mel completed 12 laps for 40 miles in the 12 hours with Ian competing 16 laps for 56.3 miles. On Sunday Mel and Lindsey Clifford took part in the 10k Plod with Mel finishing in 61mins.
Multi Event Results
Sunday saw the Great Weston ride take place with various distances covered by the entrants. Congratulations to all WAC members who took part.
