Read All About It – Weekly Update 19/5/24. 


Weekly forecast 

We are promised a couple more days of sunshine and gentle winds before a return to westerly winds with rain at some point most days from Wednesday. The winds will be moderate during mid-week but drop light again by next weekend. Max temperatures are forecast to be 16 to 20 with min 9 to 11.


Road race results

Thursday saw the final event of the 23/24 Prom run series. Darren Stacey was 1st WAC man in 6th position and 1st V40 in 27.50, followed by Ben Haines 2nd V40 in 28.12 and Kieron Summers 3rd V40 in 29.19. New member Tyler Compson took nearly 3 mins of his previous time to finish 10th overall in 29.45. Alice Smith was 1st V40 in 32.20 followed by Laura Fricker who was 3rd SF in 33.08 and Pip Stephens who was 1st V50 in 35.23.

In the presentation of the series awards Alice Smith finished 2nd V40, Pip Stephens 1st V50, Ben Haines 1st V40 and Richard Goddard 1st V60.

The prom races now take a rest for the summer but will soon be back, with a provisional date of Thursday the 12th of September for the first race of the 24/25 series.


Sunday saw both the Great Series Bristol half marathon and 10k take place.

Steve Lovell was 1st WAC man in 1.33.38, followed by Andrew Popham in 1.37.16 and James Pink in 1.37.21. Hannah Keating was 1st WAC lady in 1.43.08 followed by Georgie pink in 1.45.41 and Astrid Noordermeer in 2.07.56.

In the 10k race that took place before the half Susan Duncan was 4th V40 in 41.29 followed by Lesley Bowskill in 56.06 and Nicky Baker in 1.07.30. Paul Baker was 1st WAC man in 42.25 followed by Stephen Colbourne in 1.05.09.

Sunday saw Peter Morton and Kirsty Dearing take part in the Cardiff Bay 10 with over 4000 other runners. Peter finished in 36.04 with Kirsty finishing in 59.08.


Off-Road race results

Saturday 18th May saw Julie Bailiss run the Trail Events Wye Valley off-road half. Not to be confused the race is advertised as 15.4 miles and 1975f of climb. Julie finished the race that took place in very warm conditions 60th overall and 1st V50 in 2.40.10.


Sunday the 19th saw Caroline Holt and Barry Hall take part in the Wray Trail half along a dis-used rail line between Bovey Tracey and Mortonhampstead and back. Barry finished in 2.06.36 and Caroline in 2.33.59.


Rob Osment and Benji took part in the Camelot Challenge 10k Canicross event in Sherborne Dorset over a course covering 575ft of climb. They finished the run in 55.01.


Multi Event results

Sunday 19/5 saw Steve Delve and Louise Derrick take part in the Outlaw 70.3 half ironman in Nottingham. Steve finished in 5.46.04 with Louise finishing in 6.22.16.

Sunday also saw a large group of WAC members take part in the Cotswold 51 Fiver standard distance Tri (1500m lake swim, 40k bike and 10k run). Cam slater was 1st WAC man in 2.21.14 followed by Gregory Speller in 2.33.04 and Kevin Bale in 2.27.18. Michelle Lynam was 1st WAC lady in 3.14.31 followed by Rachel Stacey in 3.16.41 and Gerry Metcalfe in 3.30.30.

Membership Renewal 1/4/24

Thank you to the 7 who have renewed this week. The membership list shows that there are still 97 people who were members in the 23/24 period that have yet to renew. Many of you are long term members still attending our sessions, renewal needs to be completed by 31/5 so please try to find time to do this when you can.

This session is suitable for all abilities and starts off from the Crown and heads off to the award Lands where you will enjoy Sarah type fun loops incorporating Mikes Path. The challenge is to see how many loops you can /want to do in 30 mins … then a lovely run back for beers !

The Wednesday swim sessions 20.20 to 21.30 at Burnham-on-Sea pool

Over winter is the ideal time to brush up and develop your swimming technique, ideal prep for next season. Suitable for beginners to seasoned triathletes, injured runners – develop your aerobic capacity and muscles you didn’t know existed

Sessions can be booked in blocks of five (£32.50) or ten (£55.00) ad hoc PAY as you GO (£6.50) sessions occasionally available, for PAYG – please ask if there’s space prior to session
