Weekly forecast

The unsettled weather pattern continues for this week with some rain Sunday night through to Monday afternoon then gentle winds and sunny intervals or longer periods of sun until Thursday. The temp is then forecast to get warmer but with a return of the sunshine and showers and moderate SW wind. Max temperature of 19 to 24 with night min of 11 to 17 degrees.

 

Road race results

 Sunday saw 3 WAC members take part in the Solihull marathon over an undulating course with 600ft of climb. Dawn Kinghorn was 1st WAC runner in a new pb of 2.04.25 followed by Sue Dyer and Nicola Currell in identical time of 2.19.19.

 

Off-Road race results

Saturday 12th saw Sarah and Josh Harris take part in the Crossing of Dartmoor ultra marathon covering 34 miles and 4100ft of climb and finishing in Ivybridge. Josh finished 15th overall and 1st MV50 in 6.09.45 with Sarah finishing in 9.25.17.

 

Saturday also saw WAC runner Ian Regan complete the TEC Cotswold off-road marathon which includes 3800ft of climb finishing in 5.15m

 

 Multi Event results

Not one of our usual multi events but this weekend 7 WAC members braved the wind and rain of Saturday and better weather on Sunday to represent Weston AC in the beach netball competition. Well done to Sheryl Selway, Katie Gormley, Louise Davison, Sarah White, Darren Stacey, Rob Mountford, and Adrian Noble for their efforts.

 

 

Information and help needed.

 

Crook Peak cake race.

 Don’t forget Wednesday the 16th of August sees the 30th running of the Crook Peak Cake Race which WAC will be helping to organise as usual. The weather forecast is good with sun and hardly any wind promised. The race is 3 miles long with 800ft of climb with the race HQ at the White Hart in Cross.

There are no pre-entries with the £7 entry fee payable on the night between 6.15 and 6.45 with a 7.00pm race start (card payment preferred)   

 

Championship 2023

A new tab has been added to the website under members/2023 Championship which is a points summary. The latest summary shows the position after Pawlett.

A link has been added on the points summary page making it easier for you to find the detailed points position and list of the 2023 championship races.

17/9             Oldbury 10-mile road

5/10             Prom run.

 

Christmas Cracker and Mendip Muddle now open for entries.

 Both races are now open for entries on the Race Nation site.

If you have friends or family who have always said they want to take part in the Cracker  taking place on the 10/12 this year, then suggest that they sign up now to be committed and have plenty of time to train.

The Muddle this year takes place 22/10, if you don’t fancy running the race we will be looking for lots of help organising and marshalling the event in the lovely mendip countryside.

 

Entries for the 23/24 Prom series will be open shortly.

 

 

London Marathon Ballot for club place

 The organisers of the London Marathon have changed the allocation requirement for the club places allocated to EA. To receive 2 places your club now needed to have 190 affiliated members on the 28/7/23. We have approx. 160 affiliated members so will only receive 1 place this year. With us only receiving 1 place there will be no ballot just for members who have not run London before.

 

The criteria to enter the ballot for the one place in the April 2024 race are:

You must have been a member of the club prior to 1st August 2022.

You must be individually affiliated to England Athletics for the year 23/24

You must have entered and been rejected for the 2024 race.

You must have volunteered to marshal or help organise one of our club races (Cracker, Prom Runs or Muddle)

 

If you meet the criteria and wish to be entered in the draw, please drop a mail to Jim Wotton via the club website or DM with your proof of entry attached.     

 

 

TWAC

TWAC session this week 14/8/23 is named the ‘Scheduled fun’.

Meet at the crown pub in Churchill where you will decide on group and pace.
Each group will have a set of What3Words coordinates where you will navigate to and your fun instructions. At each point you will have some ‘Scheduled fun’. On your return the ‘Scheduled fun will be judged and a small prize for the group seemingly having the most scheduled fun!!!
What to bring: Trail shoes, Phone with the what3words app downloaded (it’s free)

Meeting – Crown Churchill at 18.50

This session is suitable for everyone.

 

 

The Tuesday session meeting at Hutton Moor will be taken by Carol, Nick or Jim and will be suitable for all abilities. The session this week will be Warm up followed by:

5x 30 secs hard/ easy

8 x 4 min Z4 RPE 7/8 (Uncomfortably hard laboured breathing)

5x 30 secs hard /easy

Followed by cool down.

 

The Wednesday swim sessions at Burnham-on-Sea pool

Reminder: Swimming Summer Break

 

Swim sessions will re-start on Wednesday 30th August.

If you would like to join the swim sessions on Wednesday evenings at Burnham pool 20:20 – 21:30 and don’t have the payment details please contact Margaret Sills (or for any questions you might have you contact Margaret Sills, Rachael Vincent, or Nick Cook)

£55 for 10 sessions (£32.50 for 5 sessions if work takes you away etc.)

Numbers limited so please pay as soon as you can to reserve your place.

 

You need to be a fully paid-up member of Weston Athletic Club to access swim sessions.

 

September 9th parkrun.

Please can people volunteering to be part of the WAC parkrun takeover use the usual booking email address marineparade@parkrun.com to show your availability – please mention that you are a WAC member and include your parkrun id if you have one and what task you would like to do if you have a preference. Don’t worry if you are not already signed up you can still volunteer just by mailing marineparade@parkrun.com

 

We now have the August code for the 10% discount and free postage on orders from Sportsshoes (min order value £50). This code is on the WAC members social fb page for WAC member use only. Please ask Jim, Helen, or Julia if you do not access to fb and wish to put in an order with them. (NB Now includes Brooks shoes again)

Thursday – Group runs from Hutton Moor. Meet in the car park at 6.50. Provisional route will be fartlek.

 

No separate Group 6 only meeting this week.

Session will be taken by Jim – suitable for all abilities.
