Read All About It – Weekly Update 12/5/24.

Weekly forecast

After a week of summery weather, we are promised a return to an unsettled period with more average temperatures. The week will start with a fresh South Easterly wind that will reduce in strength to moderate and a variable gentle breeze by the end of the week. The change will bring rain at some point every day but also warm sunny intervals or longer sunny periods. Max temperatures are forecast to be 16 to 18 with min 9 to 11.

Road race results

Wednesday saw three runners take part in the latest Yeovilton 5k Series race. Darren Stacey had a new pb in 16.47 finishing 2nd V40, Laura Fricker was 4th lady overall and 1st V35 in 19.42 with Sheryl Selway just outside her pb in 23.05 and 4th V45.

Sunday saw Richard Goddard take part in his first marathon the Exeter Live Better marathon. The sunny conditions made it difficult to judge the correct pace and a self-admitted too fast 1st 20 miles took its toll and led to Rich falling close to the end. He had to walk the last half mile but that did not stop him from still finishing 1st V60 in 3.43.21.

The recent Newport marathon was this week confirmed to have been 300m too long. An adjusted list of times has been produced with the reduction to Ian Connock’s time of 1.06 meaning that he did achieve a new pb in the race of 2.47.48.

Off-Road race results

Saturday 11th May saw the West Country Hilly 50 starting and finishing in Minehead, this ultra has 8000ft of climb in it. No official results yet but facebook posts show that Josh Harris finished 5th male overall and Lucie Weston and Lucy Avery finished joint 3rd lady in 11 hours 56 mins. Ian Regan completed 37 miles of the event before having to withdraw due to injury.

Not a race but a major event on Saturday saw the annual ‘TWAC Race the Train’ on the Exmoor hills and coast. The glorious sunny weather saw over 40 members get the first train to Bishops Lydeard and cover as much of the 25 miles to Minehead as they wished before getting on the last train from Minehead at one of many stations as it returned to its’ starting point. The first team got to Minehead with 50 mins to spare by the look of it.

Multi Event results

Again, not a race but a challenge was completed by new member Russ Forsbrook on Saturday. The Carten100 annual event gives people the chance to challenge themselves to cycle the 110 miles from Cardiff to Tenby.

Information and help needed.
