COACHING PRINCIPLES

During the course of the club’s history Weston Athletic Club has changed from a mixture of juniors and adults competing in track and field events, cross-country and road racing to what we have today.

The club membership now consists of adults aged from eighteen to seventy plus, of mixed ability and who want to train and compete in events ranging from 5K to full marathon and ultra road events, as well as trail and off-road events from cross-country to multi-day endurance and running festival events. 


Members have different aspirations and goals and the training is structured around the core elements of speed work, strength and conditioning and endurance. Speed training is undertaken
via interval and fartlek sessions, stamina and strength work via hill and club circuits and the longer, slower endurance training usually undertaken at weekends.

Some members are involved in training for duathlon (run, bike, run) and triathlon (swim, bike, run) see the separate detail of what the club offers under the TRI section of the website.

Training is structured to use either mixed ability or equal ability group sessions as appropriate for content and location. All members are able to develop their running standard at the pace they decide upon; individuals can aim as high as they wish but above all, can enjoy and benefit from their endeavours.

Individuals who want to train for specific distance e.g. a full marathon can seek individual training plans and guidance from the team of experienced coaches.

The underlying philosophy of the club is to provide a platform by which members can be part of a like-minded group of individuals with the principal aims of remaining healthy and achieving the running goals they aspire to. 

The coaching team will provide a safe and structured environment during the normal club training schedule for all members. They will support and guide members to develop their running ability and will provide individual guidance when it is required.
